When considering fiberglass versus vinyl windows, what's important? In this video, Matt Risinger, master builder, compares fiberglass and vinyl windows. In the past, Risinger chose vinyl when he came across the need for custom sizing. Today, Integrity Windows customizes windows for both new construction and remodels, all the way down to a sixteenth of an inch. Risinger prefers fiberglass for several reasons, the top being strength. Especially with large windows, fiberglass doesn't give the "play" that vinyl does, as vinyl is a much weaker material. Second, exterior fit and finish. Vinyl window corners are heated and melted together and then the excess is cut off. A fiberglass, in comparison, is crisp in the corners. As far as finish goes, the finish on the outside of a vinyl window will be painted on which easily fades and can be scratched and damaged. Fiberglass is resistant to scratching and will not fade. Third, expansion and contraction, especially in humid climates. Again, fiberglass wins here as it has the same expansion and contraction rate as the glass. Vinyl moves 8x more. Fourth," vinyl has a questionable environmental record. Risinger believes vinyl will be phased out in the future.
