Nail sealability testing and research into the topic has taken a more important role in construction. In this video, Matt Risinger, master builder, looks at claims of products that make nails self-sealing, questioning the validity of those claims. An author of a recent article discusses how she tested nail sealability against the current standards. The testing involved roofing nails going into a membrane and finding out if they could keep water from leaking through that membrane. The test is described and shown, once the testing is performed," the results are put into an environmental chamber at 40 degrees F for a couple of days. She found that only half of the products were tested and none of them passed except one - a Fluid Apply product. The take away for Risinger is that he cannot rely on a membrane to be self-healing or self-gasketing and discusses potential remedies.
