Designing for durability takes resolve. In this video, Matt Risinger discusses durability and how it relates to a recent remodel of a two-story house. The architects added two-foot overhangs on all of the roof sections and added awnings wherever there was not a roof protecting windows. This planning will allow many decades or even generations to the longevity of house. Risinger compares the overhands and awnings to being in a rainstorm with a raincoat or jacket not perfectly zipped up. It doesn't matter how expensive the raincoat is, the person will still get wet. However, if an umbrella is added to the mix, the umbrella will shed water away so that even a fairly inexpensive raincoat would do a good job of protecting from the rain.This holds true for modern houses without overhangs. The builder must execute perfectly, or even the smallest mistake can mean a leak or failure in the future. Awnings and overhangs are not only rain protection," but sun protection as well. They prevent the sun from beating down on windows and protect from UV exposure and also from the negative effects on energy efficiency in the home. Overhangs and awnings go far in making a home more durable for the long haul.
