Join Master Builder Matt Risinger as he discovers water damage during a whole house renovation. The 1950's home in this video contains damage caused by water and water vapor. Traditional brick and stone cladding has an air space behind it with weep holes at the bottom, but this is not always effective and offers an alternate approach for builders. Water damage from irrigation, such as sprinkler systems, is a real problem in an area like Austin, Texas where there is only about 30 inches of rainfall each year. The stone and mortar of your home's facade soaks up all that water and retains it. It may look dry from the outside, but the inside is a different story. Termites are looking for damp, broken down cellulose products and a wet façade provides that for them. A rain event is simulated on the job site and the water coming through is clearly seen.
