Let's first address WHY we want the ledger spaced off the house: water management. The last thing we want to do is trap moisture between the ledger and the sheathing. This will lead to rot, wall and deck failure, as well as a possible mold issue in the wall cavity.
There are a handful of ways to space a deck ledger from specific spacer products to using a standard washer. All approved methods but to keep it simple, Wade sometimes uses leftover materials on the job site. On this episode, Wade will show you how he uses solid pressure treated lumber, milled to 1/2", to act as a spacer. Using some leftover Tri-Flex (a high performance water shedding material) and ZIP Stretch Tape, Wade makes a simple but yet long lasting spacer to keep the ledger off the house.
