So often, old doors show a craftsmanship that has long gone by the wayside. In this video, Matt Risinger, master builder, discusses reusing old doors. At a recent 1930s remodel, a pair of old original doors were reused in a master bedroom. The doors were stripped to remove the lead-based paint, but the hardware was kept. It was decided that the trim would be replaced. The doors, once stripped and repainted, were set into a new jamb using a huge transom window over the top of the hardware. The hardware on the doors is the original crystal hardware from the 1930s and a skeleton key was found that works on the doors. While doing this type of project does not save money on cost, it would have been difficult to find a door that would match the quality, feel and touch of old doors like these, especially where architecture plays a key role in a remodel. Think about saving old doors if you can for your remodels.
