Light checking can humble even the most experienced drywall finisher. Taking a light and raking it across a finished surface can show imperfections the naked eye can't see. Now is every single job light checked? NO. Light checking is used for a smooth wall/level 4 finish and level 5. And not every area needs to be light checked. If you have a lot of natural light in the area you will see most imperfections with the naked eye.
