Ensuring that there is backup power no matter what is causing an outage is really important. In this video, Matt Risinger, master builder, discusses a Kohler 14 kW standby generator that runs on natural gas. In the Austin, TX area, you don't need a hurricane to knock power out. A wind storm or a downed branch can knock out power to a neighborhood. In a power outage the generator starts and spins an alternator using a direct-drive shaft and a transfer switch on the wall transfers your backup power. The system turns itself on weekly and tests itself for 10-15 minutes. There is very little maintenance. There's an air filter, oil filter and spark plugs. As long as it's maintained it will last between 20 and 30 years. It should be able to carry heating and air conditioning for the hone. It can be turned on and off manually or it will do it itself automatically. Backup systems will provide service and peace of mind when the power is interrupted by storms.
