In this video, Jordan Smith gives us a look at fillet gauges and 7018 welding rods. With expertise as a welder in the oil and gas industry, Smith used a fillet gauge on a regular basis and continues to use it in the building industry. The gauge works by seeing if the fillet welding put down comes to the top edge of the measurement on the gauge (in this case ¼"), then it is a quarter-inch weld. Using a mock up to demonstrate measuring, Smith shows us a good weld, where the measurement comes in where it should and one that does not, requiring rewelding. One side of the tool is for single beads while the other side is for multiple beads. Smith walks us through welding with a 7018 all-purpose welding rod, describing the numbers in the process. Each digit describes more about the rod. He also talks about how you know if the weld is good, or it will be problematic and how to clean up the weld once finished. There are many tools that are used for welding and this is just one very useful one. Check out Smith's video and learn how to properly measure your work.
