Matt Risinger speaks with Gord Cooke at the 20th Annual Westford Symposium on Building Science Nerd Camp about a few hot topics in building science. Cooke brings up mold and moisture, which is an issue that has been seen throughout the United States. At the end of the day, Cooke advises to stop testing for mold and to focus on looking for moisture problems. While it is not possible to rid the world of mold spores, we can build a mold-free home by tackling moisture issues. Even ICFs and SIPs are sensitive to moisture intrusions. When it comes to spray foam and some of the negative chatter around it, Cooke reminds Risinger that about 2 to 8% of the population is sensitive to just about any material, and spray foam is not an exception. With that being said, it is a great insulation solution. Folks in the industry should continue to seek training on how to most effectively use spray foam.
