Matt Risinger's company is about to remodel a 10-year-old house. Prior to construction, they conducted a duct blast test to see how leaky the house's ducts are. Tim Brown of Pioneer Designs walks us through the process of testing the ductwork. Using a duct blaster, they will be able to determine how much leakage is in the duct system. If you have leaky ducts, air conditioning will leak into an unconditioned space instead of the home. This is the same test that's now required of all homes prior to selling in the City of Austin and a great test for overall home efficiency.The first thing they'll do is look at the units to determine the tonnage, which will tell them how many CFMs, on average, will move through the duct system. They will then seal all of the registers to get a closed system and determine where the leaks occur. In one register, they install a pressure tube to get a pressure difference from the duct system to the fan in the room that's being tested. From here, they will be able to determine how many CMFs are leaking out. The fan depressurizes the system. On average, most duct systems leak 4 to 6%, but this home was at 11%.
