Home Building Science SummerCamp 2014 Interviews - (Incl Joe Lstiburek)
Building science summer camp is always a time for great interviews and this session doesn't disappoint. In this video, Matt Risinger kicks off interviews with Allison Bailes, Joe Lstiburek, Mark LaLiberte.Risinger believes that there is brilliance in the industry and that researchers, engineers, universities and everyone involved need to continually stretch the boundaries. What is important for young builders to know? Control—controlling air conditioning, moisture and heat. Understand the properties of materials, applications and climate zones. We need to know thermodynamic basics, appreciate climate interfaces and variability in climates. Three things cause a building to fail faster than anything else moisture, water and rain. And, if we aren't conveying the information correctly, demonstrating it using mock-ups or animations, we are at risk. The science can be simple enough, but it's the execution of the science that is made difficult. There are solutions. For example, Mark LaLiberte's Construction Instruction, the iPhone, iPad app that is free provides the animations and information that builders need. Questions get answered at science camp. For instance, advice for hot humid climates like Texas? Does it make a difference to use this technology or that? How to get airflow right. The importance of efficiency over ductwork. What are interesting or emerging trends in building science that will affect the nation? What are the advances in HVAC? Why are we using batts that are smashed into cavities still? Check out the building science summer camp and even easier, download Construction Instruction so that you can access the answers to these important questions.
