Home Building Fastening Systems for Stair Treads

Over the years, Wade has installed stairs through various methods including face nailing, face screwing, counter sinking screw holes, and others, but the thing that he doesn't love about those methods is that a lot of floors are stained and when you have a nail hole, the stain shows where the plug was placed.

So, how about no nails or screws through the top of the tread?

This works by using a riser in the back to recieve the rabitted stair tread, fitting like a glove. It's secured on the front with a desktop fastner. It will flush and attach nicely to the tread this way.

Certain types of wood glues eventually fail and squeak so Wadw opts for 100% silicone, applying it directily to the top of the stringers and the face of the riser, along wth a Titebond wood glue on the riser and the skirt board. Once in place, snap the tread into place with a mallet and lock it in. Then take a right angle drill and screw one little screw into the desktop fastner.

Nice clean surface with no nail holes.
