In this video you'll see Tim Brown of Pioneer Designs perform a blower door test. Matt Risinger is about to undertake a remodel job on this home, and wants to establish a benchmark for air tightness, as well as set priorities for problem areas to address. The blower door test evaluates how "leaky" the house is—how much outside air is coming into the home, and helps identify the areas of leakage. They go through the testing process, which uses a large fan to depressurize the house. Then, areas of airflow are identified. For example, recessed can lights in the ceiling that are basically holes into the unconditioned attic space, and around kitchen cabinetry where wires come through. Finally, he addresses the door to the garage, which shows a good bit of air flow. This is one door you do not want air flowing into the house—gasoline, paint fumes, chemicals, exhaust from cars, and so forth. So that will have to be tightened up and decoupled from the house with spray foam insulation. They also discuss the V in HVAC and how you want the ventilated air to be filtered fresh air input through your HVAC system, not air from leaks throughout the home. Check out the video to learn more.
