Austin Architect James D. LaRue discusses the architectural decisions behind a modern infill house in the Brykerwoods neighborhood of Austin, TX. The home sits in a tight, urban setting close to downtown 55 and is surrounded by beautiful trees on the property. At the south side of the house sits floor-to-ceiling glass that is protected by the shade of the trees. Reclaimed brick was brought from the outside of the house to inside, and its aesthetic mimics the Austin common style that is seen throughout the city. The brick has a palette of cream with a little pink and is made in Mexico.One notable thing that LaRue's team did while designing this house was model it in a 3D program so they were able to see what the awning above the glass looked like. They witnessed what the sun looked like shining through during various times of the year. They learned that in July, the sun would barely hit the floor inside. During the winter," the sun really comes in the house. The angle of the awning was changed to provide a little bit more shade.
